North Island thunderstorms threat downgraded

21:21 pm on 13 November 2012

MetService says the threat of severe thunderstorms and damaging hail has now receded from the North Island, but heavy rain in Hawke's Bay and Gisborne could cause flooding and slips.

Forecasters say 100mm has fallen from Gisborne city down to Mohaka in northern Hawke's Bay, and a further 20mm is possible on Tuesday evening on already saturated ground.

Residents are warned to watch for rising streams and rivers, and drivers should be aware of possible flooding and slips.
