Two people were injured when their van crashed on the Napier to Taupo road.

Police said the Toyota left the road about 5km north of Te Pohue about 3.20am today and fell six metres down a bank, trapping the occupants.

The Fire Service was called to get the man and woman out of the vehicle. Both had moderate to serious injuries and were being treated at Hawke's Bay Hospital in Hastings.

One lane of the road was closed at the crash site.
