Police say a vehicle on Henderson Road in the suburb of Flaxmere failed to stop for officers at about 11.35pm last night.

A short time later, the 39-year-old driver got out of the vehicle on Swansea Rd and assaulted an officer before running away.

Police said a taser was fired twice during the alleged assault, but "does not appear to have made contact on either occasion".

After a short foot chase, he was found at a property on Canaervon Drive, police said.

"At this point the driver suffered what appears to have been a medical event.

"Police administered first aid and called an ambulance, however the man died at the scene."

Several investigations are underway.

The officer involved sustained minor injuries.

Eastern District Commander Superintendent Tania Kura said several investigations into the incident were underway.

"Our thoughts are with the man's family and friends at this extremely difficult time and we will ensure support is available to them."
