The Australian golfer Brad Kennedy leads the New Zealand Open from local Josh Geary by three shots, heading into the final day at Christchurch's Clearwater Resort.

Kennedy's held a share of the lead after each of the first two days but went into the outright lead today after holing an eagle, seven birdies and five bogeys in his four under par third round of 68.

He's nine under overall, three strokes ahead of fellow overnight leader Geary of Tauranga.

Geary hit a one under 71 for six under overall, while another Australian, Terry Pilkadiris, is alone in third after a three under 69.

The other overnight leader and former champion Craig Parry was one over for the day - he's in a share of fourth with two other Australians.

The outstanding young Australian amateur Jake Higginbotham fell away with a triple bogey on the 17th hole for four over and a share of 13th.
