Papua New Guineans urged to enjoy festive season responsibly or face heavy fines

The Papua New Guinea police has warned residents to enjoy the festive season responsibly or prepare to be arrested and pay heavy fines for bail.

The Post-Courier reports that police has increased the bail amounts for several offences.

These including: noise pollution, domestic violence, loitering, graffiti, drunk and disorderly conduct, assault, ethnic clashes, possession of offensive weapons, street vending, consuming home-brew, and drinking and driving.

People playing loud music after 10pm will be arrested and required to pay a $5000 kina (NZ$2000) bail.

"And domestic violence abusers have now been raised from $2000 kina to $5000 kina," the news outlet reported.

Metropolitan Commander Silva Sika told the Post-Courier that the increase in bail amounts is to ensure everyone can enjoy the holiday season peacefully.

He said those who disturb the peace should be made aware of the news bail amounts.

Papua New Guineans have been told to stay vigilant and follow local laws to avoid getting arrested.
