Senate bill promotes gender equality in French Pacific

14:59 pm on 25 July 2013

A French Senate committee has altered a bill by the Minister of Women's Rights, Najat Belkacem-Vallaud, for measures to combat gender inequalities.

It also says the equality clauses should apply to overseas territories, such as Wallis and Futuna, New Caledonia and French Polynesia.

The bill says in domestic violence cases, the judge should get the view of the victim on whether to hold separate hearings and that they be held behind closed doors.

In regard of the possible eviction of an abuser from their home, it has strengthened the provisions regarding the transfer of a couple's home to the victim of violence.

The committee has also called for tougher penalties for political parties which fail to meet the requirement of gender parity on electoral lists.

The bill is to go to the Senate in September.
