Armstrong and Contador ride together

11:28 am on 4 December 2008

The Astana teammates Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador have ridden together for the first time since seven-times Tour de France champion Armstrong announced his comeback from retirement.

Tensions arose within Astana when the American, who won the Tour from 1999 to 2005, decided to return from a three-year break in September and join the team managed by his mentor Johann Bruyneel.

Spaniard Contador, who won the Tour in 2007 and won the Italian and Spanish classics this year, said at the time he would consider leaving the team if he was not assured of a leader place in the Kazakh-funded squad.

However the pair rode alongside each other today, the fourth day of a one-week training camp in the Canary Island of Tenerife.

Contador only started training yesterday after recovering from nose surgery.

Both men will take part in the Tour de France next year, with Bruyneel having insisted the team would eventually work for "the best rider".
