Tautua Samoa caucus elect new leaders

08:33 am on 19 May 2011

The opposition Tautua Samoa party has elected a new leader and a deputy leader, two weeks after its former leader Vaai Papu Vailupe was found guilty of bribery and treating.

The charge disqualified Vaai from holding the parliamentary seat of Vaisigano number one.

In a caucus meeting, the party's deputy leader Palusalue Faapo II was voted as leader while A'eau Peniamina Leavaise'eta was selected as the new deputy leader.

The newly elected leader says the decision by the caucus was unanimous and a vote was not held.

But a party supporter says the leaders were chosen in a secret ballot, and that new MPs former District court judge, Lefau Harry Schuster, and former University lecturer, Afualo Dr Woods Salele, were amongst the nominees for the leadership.
