A man has been charged following a shooting in Lower Hutt.

Detective senior sergeant Martin Todd said police responded to a report of shots fired near Randwick Road in Moera about 1.15am on 4 March.

A person who was shot was taken to hospital by police in a serious condition.

He is now stable after surgery.

The 24-year-old accused was due to appear in Hutt Valley District Court on Wednesday on charges including wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Todd said the incident was isolated and there was no ongoing threat to the general public.
