Christchurch seaside residents opposed to a planned coastal pathway from Ferrymead to Scarborough have backed down from their threat to take legal action.
They objected to the 6km-long pathway because an 800m section of it would have run in front of their properties.
It's estimated the pathway could be used by a million cyclists and pedestrians each year.
After consultation with the residents, the Christchurch City Council has amended the route so the pathway will run behind the properties and has voted unanimously to accept the draft concept plan, which will now go out for public consultation.
Redcliffs community spokesman Grant Bargrove says he is pleased with the outcome, but still has concerns about the reclamation of estuary land because of the effect it could have on marine life.
