On Monday, Tauranga City Council voted to reclassify part of the Gate Pā Recreation Reserve to establish a National Institute of the New Zealand Land Wars.
The institute was proposed by the Pukehinahina Charitable Trust, in partnership with mana whenua Ngāi Tamarāwaho.
It's expected to provide a workshop space, exhibition areas, performing arts space, plus room for a visitor experience of contemporary and traditional Māori life.
Ngāi Tamarāwaho representative and historian Buddy Mikaere talks to Jesse about the significance of the change.
