The holiday road toll now stands at two after a person died following a road crash in Canterbury this afternoon.
The person was killed when the car they were in crashed into a power pole in Glentui.
Five others were taken to Christchurch Hospital in a moderate condition.
The holiday period began at 4pm on Christmas Eve and finishes at 6am on 5 January.
Last year seven people died in road crashes during the holiday period - one more than the record low the year before.
