Some Northland hapū are threatening to walk away from attempts to get negotiations for the Ngāpuhi Treaty of Waitangi settlement on track. The Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations, Andrew Little, has been meeting representatives of the Ngāpuhi settlement body, Tuhoronuku, and hapū that dispute the body's mandate. There were hopes the minister's intervention could resolve a rift that has stalled the settlement negotiations for the past seven years. But the Ngāti Hine chair, Waihoroi Shortland, told RNZ Northland reporter Lois Williams some hapū are losing faith in the process and are ready to walk away.
