15:59 pm on 13 May 2003

Maryanne Togiola Tulafono has made her first public speech as First Lady, at the National Council of Women's prayer service for Mother's Day.

The First Lady paid tribute to the contributions of mothers in taking care of their families and communities.

Speaking on the theme of the service, Prayer for World Peace, she thanked God that the war in Iraq had ended.

The First Lady then said that true peace cannot be achieved when there are wives and daughters being abused, sexually and physically.

She also called for action to end domestic abuse and urged mothers to step up efforts to prevent such incidents and report them when they happen.
