He is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and three charges of being a party to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police have said the incidents appear to be gang-related. Seven other people were arrested last weekend.

Police said further arrests were likely.

Wellington politicians had expressed concern over the weekend violence.

Councillor Iona Pannett said the incidents were unacceptable and scary.

"We need to ask why there is gang warfare in central Wellington. And that means potentially getting the gangs around the table to work on some solutions."

Police continue to make inquiries to identify others who may have been involved in the shooting, and further arrests are likely, they said in a statement.

Police have spoken to a number of people who were present at the time of the incident, but are still seeking information from others.
