The Marshall Islands has welcomed the signing of an amended Compact of Free Association with the United States.

The compact, which also covers the Federated States of Micronesia, provides funding of three point five billion US dollars for a 20 year period.

It gives the US continued use of Kwajalein Atoll which has a military missile tracking station.

The deputy director for the Compact Negotiation Office in Majuro, David Paul says the signing is considered the "icing on the cake".

"It pretty much confirms the commitment that the United States lays on this special and unique relationship between the RMI and the United States. It pretty much opens a new chapter in the long term relationship between the two countries and two governments."
