Police said flooding and debris were causing road and rail issues on State Highway 1 near Paekākāriki.

They said the debris had also encroached rail lines, causing a passenger train to derail in the area.

There have been no reports of any injuries.

Both lanes of SH1 near Paekākāriki are open open but there are long traffic queues.

A crane may be required to move the derailed train which could affect traffic further, Waka Kotahi said.

Trains between Porirua and Waikanae on the Kapiti line were likely to remain suspended for the rest of the day.

More rain due

MetService said another 50-60mm of rain was expected this afternoon. More heavy falls are likely from 11pm with a further 70- 80mm likely during tomorrow morning.

Last night of Wellington recorded wind gusts of 130km/h hour las gales buffeted the region.

MetService forecaster Matt Ford said gusts of that speed were recorded on Mount Kaukau, Kelburn and the Remutaka Hill.

The wind had eased but warnings were in place for Wairarapa, Wellington and parts of Marlborough until 3pm.
