Police will have easier access to guns from next year, with Prime Minister John Key admitting more armed officers are inevitable. Commissioner Howard Broad has delivered a report, drafted after the shooting of two Christchurch officers, to Police Minister Judith Collins. It recommends more guns be carried in police vehicles and more officers be trained to use them.

On the international traffic survey, there's good news for Wellingtonians who are said to experience less commuter pain than most cities worldwide. In the survey, Wellington ranks with Melbourne and Houston as second-best for the level of commuter stress, behind only Stockholm. Auckland was the worst rated New Zealand city.

The death toll from a South Korean fishing vessel which sank in the Southern Ocean yesterday is likely to rise to 22 as hopes faded for 17 people missing in the freezing waters.

The police say two Moeraki men were allegedly detained in their houses by two others who then ordered them out of town. Two men from North Otago were subsequently jointly charged with kidnapping over last week's incident.
