New Zealand were 294-6 at stumps after the tourists won the toss and elected to bowl on a pitch which offered the bowlers bounce and seam throughout the day.

However as in the first test in Hamilton the Windies bowlers again failed to make the most of the conditions.

All of the New Zealand batsman, except for Ross Taylor, got to double figures but found the going tough.

Tom Latham - who is leading the side in the absence of usual skipper Kane Williamson who's at home with his wife expecting their first child - made 27, while Tom Blundell made 14, Will Young 43, Taylor 9, BJ Watling 30 and Daryl Mitchell 42.

Nicholls' sixth test century also marked the 100th test century at the Basin Reserve.

The first at the ground was by New Zealand's Stewie Dempster against England in 1930.

It was Nicholls' third test century at the Basin Reserve - he also scored the 99th test century at the ground against Bangladesh last year.

Nicholls finished unbeaten on 117 with Kyle Jamieson also at the crease on 1.
