Police say delays are expected on State Highway 1 near Hamilton after a truck and trailer unit went off the road on Saturday afternoon.
They say the incident occurred at 2.30pm near Lake Karapiro, leaving the truck down a bank.
The truck driver was initially trapped, but has been taken to hospital with potential life threatening injuries.
Police say one of the two north-bound lanes is closed and could be for some time while the vehicle is recovered.
