PNG health official says Covid-19 victims facing discrimination

Papua New Guinea's acting health secretary is asking people not stigmatise victims of Covid-19.

Eight people have been confirmed to have the virus across four provinces, and Dr Paison Dakulala said they've already received some discrimination.

The latest case is a woman in the Eastern Highlands who is living with HIV, Dr Dakulala said she will soon be ready to return home after a period of isolation.

He said all others who have contracted the virus are doing well.

Dr Dakulala said nearly 2,500 people have been tested so far.

But Dr Dakulala said they hope to scale this up once two testing experts from the World Health Organisation arrive in PNG.

He said they have been relying on the Institute of Medical Research in Goroka to analyse the results, but the medical school at the University of PNG is now also set up to do it, while the private Pacific International hospital may also be able to step in.
