The Internet is this unknown territory, that’s kind of out of control in a lot of ways. People can go on there as unknown entities, and they can do all sorts of horrible things to other people. It's kind of like the wild wild west.
Charlotte Laws started to wage war against the owner of a “revenge porn” website – a site which uploads photographs of women to the web without their consent – after a topless picture of her daughter was hacked from her daughter's email account and put online.
Dr. Laws single handedly changed the way US law enforcement responds to online revenge porn - but not before threats were made on her life by supporters of the men who run such sites.
She tells RNZ's Charlotte Graham the sites are pure, old-fashioned misogyny.
