Fiji Women's Crisis Centre criticises Indian University ban of Fiji students

08:06 am on 24 March 2010

The Fiji Women's Crisis Centre says it's unacceptable that an Indian university has banned Fiji students after a complaint of sexual harassment.

The Fiji Times had earlier reported that the Central Hindi Institute in India had stopped offering places to students from Fiji following a complaint by a female student against a professor.

The Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Jha Prabhakar, told the paper he's trying to find out why the school is punishing all students from Fiji if maybe one student has wronged them.

The Crisis Centre's deputy coordinator, Edwina Kotoisuva, says the High Commissioner's comments, and the actions of the university, are unacceptable.

"We're asking for an apology because you don't say that about somebody who has come forward and made an allegation of sexual harassment. We believe that to say that this person has wronged the name of the institution shows that there's a lack of understanding about the issue, it's a completely inappropriate response."
