It is Parekawhia McLean, a former chief executive of Waikato-Tainui who is currently director of strategy and infrastructure at the Counties-Manukau DHB.

The Chief Commissioner Colin Carruthers said McLean's background with iwi and Crown entities is a real strength for the commission.

She will lead a group of investigators and legal experts tasked with reviewing cases for the commission.

Carruthers said it has received a greater number of applications than expected, at almost one a day since the start of July.
