The tourism industry in the Cook Islands has welcomed an increased capacity on flights to North America.

Air New Zealand said from December 2nd, it would replace its Boeing 767-300 aircraft with the larger Boeing 777-200 on its flights from Rarotonga to Los Angeles.

The Cook Islands News reported that this would increase seating capacity by 36 percent, allowing more visitors from the North American and European markets.

The chief executive of the Cook Islands Tourism Corporation, Halatoa Fua, said the extra capacity would increase access to markets in the northern hemisphere, and help the corporation to diversify.

He said North American and European tourists tended to stay longer and spend more money in the country.
