Solidifying combinations and match fitness have been high on the agenda this week as the team look to redeem themselves after a disappointing end to last year's season at the Constellation Cup.

"A three nil sweep would be ideal and that's what we need." says Silver Ferns captain Katrina Grant.

"It's really good to have 14 players over here instead of 12 that means every training is competitive, we're always fighting for positions, trying to get into the 12 let alone a starting seven spot."

International standards require a squad of 12 to be confirmed 24 hours before a match, a starting seven squad is to be named 90 minutes before teams take the court.

To assist in selecting the right players, the Silver Ferns had a first hit-out against England 'A' to simulate playing the Roses.

Coach Janine Southby's decision on a starting seven isn't only for this series, she's using the tournament to raise the bar on performance working toward the biggest sporting event on the 2018 calendar.

"We're working really hard to retain this title but the ultimate focus is on our processes because we are thinking long game to the Commonwealth games." says Southby.

"we are mindful of developing that depth and making sure we have positional cover across all positions going into the games."

After England, the Silver Ferns travel to Johannesburg to play South Africa then finally Australia where Coach Lisa Alexander is keen to reclaim the series trophy.

"We've made some deliberate changes around our player personnel in preparation for Quad series." says Alexander

"we're always mindful of the Kiwis and we've done a little homework on them already, certainly the Silver Ferns have been strengthened and they have a nice balance to their squad."

The Silver Ferns will face England Roses on January 21 (6.30am NZT), the South African Proteas on January 26 and Australian Diamonds January 28.
