The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment pushed the start date for wall, floor and roof insulation requirements from November to May next year because of supply chain disruptions and material shortages.

The ministry said the extension has been granted in recognition of pressure on the building sector due to Covid and the current economic climate.

MBIE head of building and performance Dave Gittings said feedback from builders indicated that would struggle to meet new insulation requirements from November.

NZ Certified Builders chief executive Malcolm Fleming said it is a very turbulent and difficult time for the industry and builders are under immense pressure.

He said builders are battling shortage of plasterboards, supply chain constraints, skill shortages and cash-flow problems.

But Fleming reassured many homes were already being built to the new insulation standard.

He said it is imperative the industry meets the revised deadline and that the builders are committed.
