Parents: With their EP about to drop any minute now, Auckland hardcore act Parents are embarking on a five-date tour that begins tonight at Great Job! in Palmerston North. The band also have shows lined up in Wellington and Hamilton over the weekend, as well as a couple more dates scheduled for later in the month. Get over to their Facebook page for more.
Esther Stephens and The Means: While they’re said to have been working on new material, Esther Stephens (who brought us this great story) and her band The Means are heading North for a show this Saturday at Leigh Sawmill. They’ll be joined by Young Gifted and Broke’s Third3ye, who are working on a new record themselves, and Haz Beats of Team Dynamite and Home Brew. Get your tickets here.
Punk and Ska Show: Local acts Night Gaunts, Starving Millions, Dimestore Skanks and Slug Hugger are getting together for an all-ages show this Saturday at Ellen Melville Hall. But let’s let the press release do the talking: “Wish to woo a prospective lover around the arbitrary romance holiday? Lack the capitalist funding with which to do so? Worn Out is in cahoots with the Hallmark corporation and we have your back this Feb”. More here.
Carnivorous Plant Society: Ahead of their performance at Auckland City Limits, local six-piece outfit Carnivorous Plant Society are heading out on an epic 15-date tour of the country in support of their forthcoming EP Phantom Finger. They refer to their music as “Mexican mariachi mixes with spaghetti western; flavours of futuristic sci-fi blend with bizarre, spine-chilling nuances drawn from Stephen King novels” - a description which may or may not raise some questions. Either way, their Facebook page is where it’s at for ticketing details.
Dan Melchoir: Prolific experimental artist Dan Melchoir has touched down in New Zealand for three shows, beginning tonight at Dunedin’s Chicks Hotel before heading to Auckland and Wellington over the coming days. He’ll be supported on all dates by local DIY musician Krauss and you can find tickets over at Under The Radar.
Silo Sessions: Every Saturday throughout February, Wynyard Quarter will be host to the Silo Sessions. This weekend sees indie-pop four-piece Beach Pigs headline the free event - they’ll be joined by fellow Auckland act Te Huhu, who’ll kick things off at 1.30pm. Get in early.
