Farmers prepared for cold snap

05:43 am on 12 September 2011

Federated Farmers' are confident farmers around the country will know what to do in preparation for the bitterly cold weather set to hit the South Island from Monday.

A strong cold southwest flow is forecast to spread over the South Island with snow showers likely down to 300 metres in southern and eastern areas.

Heavy snow is expected in parts of Southland, particularly about the Catlins.

Federated Farmers' Adverse Events spokesperson David Rose says farmers have been through all this before and will make their own judgement calls depending on what area they're in.

He says he doesn't expect the weather to be nearly as bad as the cold snap last month.
