Anyone planning to head into avalanche terrain at Aoraki/Mt Cook is being told to reconsider, as the first winter storm of the season hits.
The national park has been battered by gales and thunderstorms today with the snow level expected to lower to a 1000 metres.
MetService said showers would fall as snow above 900 metres tomorrow.
The Avalanche Advisory has a warning in place for dangerous conditions for alpine and high alpine terrain until Saturday night.
Up to a metre of snow is forecast over the next few days but is likely be blown away by strong winds.
