Attempt to plug Timor oil leak fails

13:36 pm on 14 October 2009

An oil well in the Timor Sea is still discharging oil after the failure of a second attempt to plug it on Tuesday.

The ABC reports gas and oil have been leaking from the West Atlas rig in the Timor Sea, off the north coast of Western Australia, for more than seven weeks.

The first attempt last week to plug the hole, failed.

A date has not yet been set for another attempt to stop the flow.

Environmentalists are calling for the company to reveal how much oil has been spilled and what caused the leak.
