Papua New Guinea Pidgin Language Week is being celebrated in New Zealand for the first time.

The language week starts Sunday, 10 November, and ends on Saturday, 16 November.

This year's aim is to 'preserve, revitalise, and promote the language and culture', emphasising the importance of safeguarding linguistic and cultural heritage for future generations.

New Zealand's Pacific Peoples secretary Gerardine Clifford-Lidstone said that it is the first official Papua New Guinea Pidgin Language week supported by the Ministry.

Though, she added, the community has been working towards this for some time.

She also said the week provides a wonderful opportunity for New Zealand to recognise and celebrate the diversity of its Pacific neighbours, especially through the lens of language preservation and cultural enrichment."

In New Zealand, 1131 Papua New Guineans call this country home.
