A second person has been found dead by a specialist search team after a house fire in Manapouri, Southland.
Police said on Thursday that one person had died and others were unaccounted for following the fire.
Detective Sergeant Mark McCloy said emergency services were still working to establish whether anyone else was inside the house at the time of the fire.
Police and Fire and Emergency would continue to examine the View Street house over coming days, he said.
"A methodical investigation has been under way to account for the occupants of the address."
The cause of the fire was being investigated.
"The thoughts of everyone involved are with the victims' whanau, who are being supported at this tragic time."
He also thanked community members for their "concern and care".
Emergency service were called to the house shortly after 3.30am Thursday.
