Land hazards pinpointed in new maps

GNS Science has compiled new maps showing the locations of some of the New Zealand's worst hazards.

The maps will be available online in July this year and pinpoint active faults, potential landslide zones and liquefaction-prone areas.

Project leader Mark Rattenbury says old maps are inaccurate and do not cover certain parts of the country, while the new versions will be a fundamental resource for local authorities and all planning decisions.

"In the case of the construction or engineering sectors, it's about understanding some of the material properties that will affect their particular construction."

Dr Rattenbury says the maps will outline the best places for mineral exploration, including petroleum and coal.

The organisation has been working on the $25 million project for the past 18 years.
