The water supply of three communities near Queenstown will be chlorinated this summer, as a precaution during the busy tourist season.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council has announced it will proactively chlorinate water in Arrowtown, Hawea and Glendhu Bay.
Water in Wanaka and Queenstown is already chlorinated.
The council said the decision followed the outbreak of illness in Havelock North in August, where more than 5000 fell sick after the town's water supply was infected with campylobacter bacteria.
The temporary chlorination will be in effect from mid-December until the end of March next year.
