What do we know about Kurt Vile? His Philly drawl over the course of six albums led to the city’s mayor declaring a day in his honour (August 28th), his long hair and charm have endeared the likes of Kim Gordon, and On The Beach is his favourite Neil Young song.

But why does he do what he does?

“It’s my obsession, it’s in my DNA, my dad’s obsessed with music, he plays the same songs over and over in the car. My grandfathers are always singing songs loudly. Even without playing it I’m always collecting it, always listening to it, always getting obsessed with new things."

While there are new sounds of Vile’s latest record b’lieve I’m goin down..., his mantra towards songwriting remains the same.

"I think the realest thing for me is to be a little bit of everything," he says.

"A little funny, a little sad, whatever it calls for, but never to much of one thing.”

We'll find out for sure when Kurt Vile and his Violators perform at Maclaren Valley Music & Arts Festival 2016, amongst acts such as The Flaming Lips, Tiny Ruins and Fazerdaze.
