The council said the sea off Ngāmotu Beach had been cleared of diesel, and spill containment booms had been removed.

Scene commander Bruce Pope said booms remained in place at the mouth of the Hongihongi Stream to catch any residual oil from the roughly 100-litre spill.

Ngāmotu Beach was expected to be open to the public from about midday after final checks.
