It follows an announcement earlier today that the SFO has also received a referral from police over Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel's election expenses.

The office said it would be assessing the referral but had no further comment.

In a statement, Phil Goff's office said he was not aware of the complaint in question.

"The mayor has no knowledge of a complaint being referred to the SFO nor of any irregularities. We will not be making any further comment until we have been contacted."
