An 18-year-old man has been arrested after a shooting in Gisborne last night which injured a woman and two young people.
Inspector Sam Aberahama said police received multiple calls reporting gunshots at a property on Totara Street where there was a large gathering of gang members and associates.
A teenager, a 12-year-old girl and a young woman who were outside the property at the time, later turned up at Gisborne Hospital with gunshot-related injuries, he said.
The teenager was seriously injured, while the woman sustained moderate injuries and both remain in hospital, but the 12-year-old was less seriously hurt and was discharged to her whānau, Aberahama said.
Police were continuing to investigate the incident.
"We understand the distress these incidents cause in the local community and we want to reassure locals we are working hard to hold offenders to account," Aberahama said in a statement.
"This behaviour is completely unacceptable and is incredibly concerning when young people are injured as a result."
Police were continuing to patrol the area to reassure the public.
An 18-year-old man is due to appear in the Gisborne District Court on 3 October charged with possession of an offensive weapon and unlawfully possessing ammunition.
