Broncos pip Cowboys

A last-minute try to Brisbane Broncos halfback Jake Turpin has snatched an 18-14 victory over the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville to keep their NRL finals hopes alive.

Brisbane were down by two points heading into the final minute before Turpin defied multiple Cowboys defenders close to the line to seal an unlikely result.

The Cowboys were denied a controversial try when the officials decided Brisbane's Andrew McCullough was impeded when trying to make a tackle on Jake Clifford, despite being able to make a front on tackle as the North Queensland half crossed the line.

Brisbane are seventh on the table and North Queensland 13th.

470 women qualified for Olympics

New Zealand sailors Susannah Pyatt and Brianna Reynolds-Smith have qualified the women's 470 boat for next year's Olympics.

The pair finished 15th at the World Championships in Japan.

They only started sailing together last October.

It means New Zealand has now qualified for eight of the 10 classes - men's and women's 470, Laser, Laser Radial, Finn, 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 - and it will be up to the New Zealand selectors to decide which classes and sailors to send to the Olympics.

New Zealand's eight is the highest number of any nation behind Great Britain, who have qualified all 10 classes, and Japan who gain automatic entry to each class.

Meanwhile Paul Snow-Hansen and Dan Willcox are 10th in the men's 470 but won't be contenders for a medal.

Former England striker Andy Carroll has rejoined his boyhood club Newcastle United, eight and a half years after leaving them to join Liverpool in a then British record transfer.

The injury-plagued 30-year-old was a free agent after being released by West Ham United at the end of last season.

Arsenal have signed Scotland left-back Kieran Tierney and are set to bring in defender David Luiz from Chelsea on a two-year contract.

The $47m transfer fee from Celtic makes Tierney, the most expensive player to be signed from the Scottish Premiership.

Tottenham Hotspur signed Argentina midfielder Giovani Lo Celso from Spanish side Real Betis on a season-long loan late.

Amla retires

South Africa's Hashim Amla has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtain down on one of the country's leading batting careers.

The 36-year-old played international cricket for 15 years, scoring almost 10,000 test runs and close to another 10,000 in limited overs internationals.

He is the only South African to have scored a triple century in test cricket - a record 311 not out against England at The Oval in mid-2012 - and is second behind Jacques Kallis in test runs for the country (9,282).

His retirement follows swiftly on from that of his fast bowling colleague Dale Steyn and is no surprise after a disappointing World Cup in England in May and June.

Amla will continue to play domestic cricket.
