Te Arawa wants to see all iwi and hapu flags flying along with the New Zealand one on Waitangi Day next year.
The idea was raised by Rotorua District Council's Te Arawa Standing Committee in August.
A Hui-a-Iwi to discuss the topic was held at Te Papaiouru Marae and hosted by Te Arawa Lakes Trust in October.
Trust chairperson Toby Curtis says the meeting voted to have the Tino Rangatiratanga flag fly from the council building, next to the national one, on 6 February.
He says the iwi will hold another hui to select an official tribal flag to fly alongside.
But Dr Curtis says the committee has been told to ask the council if all hapu flags can fly from places along the main road of Fenton Street on the same day.
Rotorua Mayor Kevin Winters says he's looking forward to talking about the matter at a meeting for the committee next Monday.
