Jordan Kemp was seriously hurt in Whangarei on Saturday playing for the Otamatea Rugby Club.

Its president Kevin Robinson said the teenager tried to stand up after a tackle but then fell to the ground unconscious.

He said Jordan Kemp was sidelined with concussion for a month earlier in the season but had been cleared by doctors to play again.

It's understood he died at 3.45pm on Sunday.

The Northland Rugby Union says it and the New Zealand Rugby Union and the Rugby Foundation are working to support his family. Counselling is being arranged for fellow club members.
