Te Kuiti shearer Stacey Te Huia has abandoned his attempt at the World sheep shearing record after the target slipped out of his reach by lunchtime.
He was attempting to break the strong-wool ewe shearing record of 721 sheep in nine hours, set by by Rodney Sutton in 2007.
But at the lunchtime break, Mr Te Huia, was 13 down on the pace set by Mr Sutton and made the decision to pull out.
He needed to average just over 80 sheep an hour to break the record at the King Country Station.
