Mumbai hotels rebound from terrorist attacks

17:58 pm on 22 December 2008

The two luxury hotels in the Indian city of Mumbai targeted by militants have reopened less than a month after they were heavily damaged in the attacks.

A total of 170 people were killed when 10 gunmen stormed targets in Mumbai, including the Taj Mahal Palace hotel and the Trident-Oberoi, where about 80 guests and staff were killed.

Both hotels were the scene of fierce battles between police and the gunmen that lasted for several days.

Security has been dramatically stepped up at the hotels, with armed guards and x-ray machines to screen baggage.

Ratan Tata, chairman of the Tata Group, which owns the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, says it means a lot to be able to reopen.

Although sections of the buildings remain badly damaged, both hotels have been repaired sufficiently to receive guests.

Trident-Oberoi manager Ratan Kiswani says his restaurants and lounges were full for the reopening.
