The United Nations refugee agency says it's very concerned about recent riots at the refugee detention centre on Papua New Guinea's Manus Island in which one person died and scores were injured.
UNHCR spokesperson, Babar Baloch, says the agency has consistently raised issues around the transfer arrangements between Australia and PNG and the poor conditions asylum seekers face.
Mr Baloch says the agency has highlighted that detention practices are harmful to the physical and psycho-social well-being of transferees.
He says the agency is in discussions with the Australian government and welcomes its commitment to investigate the events.
