Public schools in the Northern Marianas are launching a weeklong Spare a Dollar Day Drive, to assist schoolchildren in American Samoa whose classrooms were washed away by last week's tsunami.
The commissioner of education, Dr Rita Sablan, wrote a statement of support to her American Samoa counterpart offering to help.
Dr Sablan yesterday memoranda to all school principals informing them about the Spare a Dollar Day Drive.
The public school system in the CNMI has over a thousand employees and about 11,000 students in its 20 public schools on Saipan, Rota, and Tinian.
The commissioner believes that a dollar donated by students, teachers, employees and families will be of significant help for the American Samoa schoolchildren.
Sablan said all donations will be transmitted to the Department of Education in American Samoa which may use the money to rebuild classrooms or buy school materials and supplies.
