The Mystics have clung on to beat the Stars 51-49 in a rollercoaster ANZ Premership netball contest in Auckland.

The northern derby came down to the wire, with a Stars fightback in the final quarter just falling short, leaving them at the bottom of the standings while the Mystics snapped a three-match losing streak to cement third place.

The Mystics pushed ahead 16-13 after the first stanza but were 26-25 down at half-time after their attack failed to fire in the second quarter.

A big third quarter proved decisive as the Mystics pulled 42-35 ahead, but that lead gradually evaporated throughout a tense finish to the game.

Goal shoot Hannah Glen held her nerve, finishing with 22 from 26 shots, while goal attack Filda Vui was busier, landing 27 of her 32.

Maia Wilson (33/36) dominated the Stars' attacking circle, with support from Amorangi Malesala (16/21).

After posting their first win last week, the Stars were consigned to a losing bonus point, their sixth of the season.
