The Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett says he's in the dark as to All Black halfback Piri Weepu's motivation for leaving the franchise to join the Blues for the next Super Rugby season.

After Saturday night's All Black test against the Springboks the 27-year-old announced he would be leaving the team he's played for 84 times to join fellow departing Hurricane Ma'a Nonu in Auckland.

When asked why he was turning his back on the only franchise he's ever played for the stocky number nine was non-committal in his explanation, downplaying the axing of senior team-mates Andrew Hore and Nonu and citing unspecified personal reasons for his departure.

Hammett says he's none the wiser as to why the Wanuiomata stalwart decided his time at the Hurricanes had come to and end.

The Hurricanes have now lost their halfback, first five and second five with All Blacks Weepu, Nonu and Aaron Cruden leaving and with All Black wingers Cory Jane and Hosea Gear yet to re-sign there will be some nervous moments ahead at the franchise.
