2010 Champions Trophy cancelled

07:45 am on 19 October 2008

Cricket's international chief Haroon Lorgat says the 2010 Champions Trophy will be cancelled in favour of a Twenty20 World Championship, further underlining the rise of the game's most abbreviated format.

International Cricket Council (ICC) supremo Lorgat says the decision comes as a result of the scheduling bottleneck that has been caused by the re-scheduling of the 2008 Champions Trophy for September 2009 in Pakistan, meaning the following year's Champions Trophy will now be superseded by the T20 championship, to be played in the West Indies.

Lorgat says the decision does not mean the end of the Champions Trophy, first conceived as a "mini-World Cup" to be played in alternate years.
