CNMI minority leader resigns from House

14:59 pm on 3 July 2011

The Northern Marianas house minority leader Diego T. Benavente has announced he's resigning to spend more time with his family.

Mr Benavente has spent more than 15 years in the Legislature as a speaker, minority leader, and member.

He served as lieutenant governor from 2002 to 2006.

His colleagues have described his resignation as a "big loss", but have respected his decision.

However, Mr Benavente says he's not totally closing the doors to politics, and may run as lieutenant governor in the next general election.

After his resignation on July the 16th he will work in the private sector.
